Clean Desk for macOS · Effective 11 October 2026
Clean Desk is a menu bar app for macOS that moves items from a folder you choose (usually the Desktop) into dated folders in another folder on your Mac. This policy explains what the app handles and where it goes. “We” means the developer of Clean Desk, reachable at hello@cleandesk.me.
In short
- Clean Desk has no server of its own and no accounts. Your files, their names and paths, and what your folders hold are never sent to us.
- The one thing the app sends is crash and diagnostic reports, described below. There are no sessions, no analytics, no ads and no tracking.
- Clean Desk itself sends your files nowhere: it only moves them between folders on your Mac. If the folder you archive into is synced by a service such as iCloud Drive or Dropbox, that service may upload the archived files, as it does for anything you put there.
Data that stays on your Mac
- Settings: the folders you chose, the schedule and the rules for what to leave alone.
- Folder access: macOS security-scoped bookmarks, so the app can reach the folders you picked.
- Run history: the last 50 runs. For each: its date, the name of every item it moved, left in place or couldn't move, with the reason, and the path of that day's archive folder. Run Details shows it item by item.
- Undo record: for the last clean into a folder on your Mac, the full original and new path of each item moved, so Undo Last Clean can put them back. It is replaced by the next clean that moves something.
These live in the app's sandbox container. A few things are kept elsewhere on your Mac:
- System log: for each run, its start and end with counts only, and for each item whether it was moved or kept, with an error code. Item names are marked private, so macOS hides them in the log.
- Notifications: if you turn them on, a summary of the run, with the archive folder's path, shown by macOS Notification Center.
- iCloud: if the folder being cleaned is in iCloud and an item there is stored only in iCloud, the app asks macOS to download it before moving it. iCloud handles that download; the app adds nothing to it.
We never receive any of it; the crash and diagnostic reports above are the only data the app sends.
Crash and diagnostic reports
When Clean Desk crashes or hangs, it sends a report to Sentry, a crash-reporting service run by Functional Software, Inc., which processes the reports for us. A report contains only:
- the kind of error and the stack trace of the code that was running, with memory addresses and the names of the app's and macOS's own libraries;
- the app version and build, the macOS version, and the Mac's model, processor type and memory size.
A report never contains file or folder names, paths, folder contents, your Google or Apple account, your email address, your name or your Mac's name. The app attaches no logs and no history of what you did, and it sends no report when nothing went wrong. Like any internet request, a report reaches Sentry from your network address; the app does not put that address in it, and Sentry does not store it, but Sentry records the country it comes from. Reports are not linked to you and are used only to find and fix faults.
Removing your data
The archived items are yours and stay where the app moved them. To remove everything else the app keeps on your Mac, quit it, delete Clean Desk from Applications, and delete ~/Library/Containers/com.katlenok.CleanDesk.
Children
Clean Desk is not directed at children under 13. We do not receive personal data from any user, of any age.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with a new effective date.
